Defense-intel cash flows caught a risk-off bid as the AI trade cracked — CACI led the vertical up 3.0% while thinly-capitalized autonomy and comms names led a broad drone-basket pullback, NextNav off 8.7%.

CACI International (CACI) led the drone complex, up 3.0% to $599.40, on a session defined by rotation rather than any drone-specific news. The tape was risk-off: a Financial Times report that OpenAI's annualized revenue was running near $50bn — below the roughly $70bn investors had assumed — knocked the AI-capex trade and sent a gauge of chipmakers down about 3.4%, while 10-year Treasury yields and crude (above $102) rose together. Capital rotated toward government-funded cash flows, and CACI sits on exactly that rung of the drone chain: the counter-UAS and C5ISR/signals-intelligence side (its SkyValor counter-drone system and intelligence-community backlog), funded by defense budgets rather than venture capex. That is the part of the supply chain that bids when the AI trade sells.

The laggard was NextNav (NN), down 8.7% to $11.60. NextNav is a positioning-navigation-timing play — a GPS-resilience chokepoint for drone autonomy in contested or denied environments — and no company-specific catalyst accompanied the drop. The move reads as high-beta deleveraging: a pre-profit, rate-sensitive small-cap sold first as risk came off and yields climbed. The structural read is the familiar one for this vertical — the thinly-capitalized autonomy and comms names carry the most beta to sentiment and get hit hardest on a risk-off day.

The broader basket was broadly red outside the primes. The small-cap sensing and comms rungs led the retreat: LightPath (LPTH) −6.3% to $9.74 on the electro-optical/infrared chokepoint, Lantronix (LTRX) −5.3% to $6.83, DroneShield's US line (DRSHF) −4.7% on counter-UAS RF/EW, Ondas (ONDS) −4.7%, and Red Cat (RCAT) −3.9% to $5.91. USA Rare Earth (USAR) fell 4.5% to $12.63 alongside the broader materials complex, and NVIDIA (NVDA), the autonomy-compute rung, slid 2.9% to $230.48 with the semiconductors. The green was concentrated in the primes: RTX (RTX) +2.3% to $184.32 and L3Harris (LHX) +1.4% to $236.92, the same defense-budget rotation that lifted CACI. AeroVironment (AVAV) held up relatively, off 0.9% to $137.60.

The near-term calendar lands on the defense rung that bid. The AUSA 2026 Annual Meeting & Exposition (Washington, DC, Oct 12–14) is next week — the Army's marquee show, where counter-UAS and loitering-munition programs get airtime. Further out on policy, China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires Nov 10, and its suspension of the gallium/germanium/antimony export ban to the US expires Nov 27 — both bearing directly on the rare-earth-magnet (USAR) and EO/IR (LPTH) chokepoints. The FAA's Part 108 BVLOS final rule remains overdue, with publication estimated by year-end.
