A federal critical-minerals package lit up the rare-earth-magnet chokepoint, with USA Rare Earth up 12.6%, while Mercury Systems extended its post-earnings slide against a broadly risk-on tape.
Friday's session ran through the magnet chokepoint. USA Rare Earth closed +12.6% at $19.26 after the Department of Energy announced $500 million across seven domestic critical-mineral processing, battery and recycling projects — a policy tailwind for exactly the mine-to-magnet supply chain the company is building at Round Top in Texas. The read-through lifted the whole rare-earth-magnets-and-motors strait: MP Materials +9.1% to $60.05 and Energy Fuels +8.9% to $15.14, with the move amplified by a macro rotation into hard assets as 30-year Treasury yields pushed toward multi-decade highs. This is the chokepoint that matters for drones — NdFeB and SmCo magnets are the physical bottleneck under every motor and actuator, and the NDAA §844/§854 ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated magnets in DoD systems takes effect January 1, 2027, hard-wiring demand toward this basket.
The laggard was idiosyncratic, not tape-driven. Mercury Systems fell −3.0% to $91.36, extending an August derating that has taken it well off its 52-week high near $128. The slide traces to a soft print earlier this month — revenue grew ~6% but non-GAAP EPS came in just below consensus — compounded by heavy insider selling and no offsetting buying. Mercury sits in the EO/IR-and-processing chokepoint, supplying rugged sensor-processing subsystems to the primes, so its weakness is a single-name story rather than a signal on the strait itself.
Elsewhere in the EO/IR layer, LightPath Technologies stood out at +10.8% to $14.42, the optics-and-infrared name that has become a domestic germanium-free lens play as China's export controls bite. The primes, by contrast, drifted with a slightly heavy defense tape even as the broad market rose: L3Harris −1.4% to $266.73, RTX −1.1% to $209.91, and autonomy-compute bellwether NVIDIA −1.0% to $214.72 ahead of its own print. The split — magnets and optics bid, primes and compute soft — is the market paying up for the scarce physical inputs over the integrators.
The calendar ahead is dense. The Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" Drone Dominance final competition and production down-select is expected in late August, DroneShield reports 1H CY2026 results and NVIDIA reports fiscal Q2 on August 26, Ambarella (autonomy compute) reports the same day, and Commercial UAV Expo runs in Las Vegas September 1–3, with LightPath's fiscal Q4 on September 10. Further out, the FAA's Part 108 BVLOS final rule remains overdue in 2H 2026, and the expiry of China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls on November 10 is the next hard catalyst for the magnet strait that led today.
