A weak July jobs print sent Treasury yields down and the rare-earth-and-magnets input choke ripping — American Resources led a small-cap reshoring squeeze while the large-cap defense-comms incumbents gave back.
American Resources led the basket in Friday's session (August 7), up +20.7% to $2.74, on no company-specific disclosure that day — the move rode the broad rare-earth-and-critical-minerals reshoring bid that swept the tape after the July payrolls report showed employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs, sending Treasury yields down and speculative small-caps ripping. In this vertical's map AREC sits at the rare-earth-and-magnets input choke: its ReElement Technologies unit refines the separated oxides and recycles the scrap that feed the permanent magnets inside every drone motor and actuator. The standing story under the move is real — ReElement was selected for Department of Energy award negotiations on July 9 — but the session's +20.7% was a low-priced name catching a sector-wide bid, not a fresh headline, and is best read as beta, not news.
The laggard was the opposite profile. Motorola Solutions fell −1.4% to $467.55, a modest give-back after its +8.2% earnings pop the prior session; it anchors the public-safety and mission-critical-radio chokepoint. Leonardo DRS slipped −1.1% and L3Harris −1.0%. The only red in the basket was the crowded, high-quality defense-comms incumbents digesting gains — a clean rotation out of the names that already priced their backlog and into the speculative input-and-reshoring layer that a dovish, risk-on tape rewards.
The rest of the basket confirmed where the money went. The rare-earth-and-materials choke led — USA Rare Earth +11.0%, MP Materials +7.6% to $51.11, Energy Fuels +9.6% — while the battery-and-power input firmed alongside it: Amprius +5.9%, Enovix +10.3%, Ultralife +19.4% on its own earnings. At the airframe-and-autonomy layer AeroVironment rose +9.1% to $186.73, Kratos +5.9%, Red Cat +6.2%, DroneShield +4.7% and Ondas +4.2%; NextNav added +8.7% and the edge-autonomy compute name Ambarella +3.6%. It was a beta-and-reshoring session in which the value accrued, as ever in this chain, to whoever controls the scarce physical input rather than the finished platform.
The calendar tightens from here. Unusual Machines reports Q2 on August 12, the Pentagon's 'Gauntlet II' drone-dominance final competition and production down-select is targeted for around August 24, and DroneShield's 1H results and NVIDIA's fiscal-Q2 print both land August 26, with Ambarella following August 27. Commercial UAV Expo runs September 1–3 in Las Vegas. The two regulatory gates still overhang everything: the FAA's Part 108 BVLOS final rule (expected in the second half and overdue against its executive-order target) and the USAF's CCA Increment 1 production decision, targeted within fiscal 2026.
