A broad risk-on melt-up lifted the domestic rare-earth magnet chokepoint and the drone airframe names, while Ambarella handed back part of Friday's surge.
Monday's tape was a broad melt-up — the Nasdaq closed +2.3% and the S&P 500 +1.6% as the Big Tech earnings wave carried risk appetite and crude slid after President Trump said he had called off a strike on Iran to negotiate reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The drone vertical's leader rode the highest-beta corner of it: American Resources (AREC) rose +13.4% to $2.03, the biggest gainer in the basket. There was no company-specific headline behind the move; AREC's ReElement rare-earth refining sits at the magnet chokepoint every drivetrain runs through, and the whole domestic NdFeB complex was bid — MP Materials +6.0% to $43.84 and USA Rare Earth +6.1% to $15.86. The strait a UAV cannot fly without is the sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnet in its motors, and that supply chain — DoD-backed, China-export-controlled, and now litigated between MP and USAR — is the one this vertical maps.
The laggard was Ambarella, down −3.9% to $82.68, and it was profit-taking rather than a break. AMBA had surged roughly 16% on Friday on its edge-AI vision franchise; Monday gave a slice of that back even as the broad market rallied. The perception-silicon chokepoint — the vision-processing SoC that lets an autonomous airframe see and decide onboard — is structurally unchanged; a one-session give-back after a double-digit pop is noise against it.
Underneath, the pure drone names were the real story. Ondas jumped +11.7% to $8.37, Red Cat +9.7% to $8.26, and Unusual Machines +9.1% to $23.08 — the counter-drone, airframe, and FPV-components layer catching the small-cap risk-on bid. The primes participated more soberly: AeroVironment +6.6% to $159.18 and Kratos +5.6% to $49.21, with NVIDIA +2.9% to $206.64 anchoring the compute layer. The oil-down, Iran-de-escalation backdrop lifted the beaten-down defense-tech complex broadly, and the drone basket, heavy with sub-$10 names, moved the most on it.
The calendar turns to hard prints this week. Amprius reports Q2 on August 5 and MP Materials on August 6 — the latter the cleanest read on whether the magnet chokepoint's economics are converting to margin. Motorola Solutions reports August 6 with the Silvus tactical-mesh integration in focus, and Unusual Machines follows August 12. Further out, the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" Drone Dominance final competition lands August 24, and DroneShield's 1H CY2026 results on August 26 close the month — both catalysts for the airframe and counter-UAS names that led Monday's move.
