An NXP takeover report sent Ambarella up 16% and lifted the edge-AI silicon that flies drones, while Friday's tape cooled the rare-earth names after their Thursday surge.
Ambarella led the vertical by a wide margin, up +16.1% to $86.00 after the Financial Times reported that NXP Semiconductors is in talks to acquire the edge-AI chip designer for more than $3 billion — the stock touched an intraday high above $91 before settling. This is the drone basket's perception-and-autonomy chokepoint: Ambarella's low-power CVflow vision SoCs are the onboard "eyes" that let a small airframe navigate, track, and target without a datalink to the ground, and NXP's interest is a strategic validation that edge inference silicon is the scarce layer in autonomy — for cars, security cameras, and drones alike. Discussions remain ongoing and could end without a deal, so the move is takeover speculation rather than a closed transaction; Ambarella's own fiscal Q2 print does not land until August 27.
The laggard was mild by comparison. On a broadly quiet-to-mixed Friday, Qualcomm was the basket's softest name at −2.6% to $147.61 — a rotation out of the merchant-silicon and comms layer rather than any drone-demand signal. The more notable cooling was in the rare-earth and magnet chokepoint, which gave back a slice of Thursday's blowout: Energy Fuels −2.3%, NextNav −2.3%, American Resources −2.2%, and MP Materials −0.7%, all easing after Thursday's session sent MP, USA Rare Earth, and Energy Fuels up double digits. The structural bid under the magnet supply chain — every domestic airframe depends on NdFeB motors — is intact; this was profit-taking, not a reversal of the reshoring thesis.
Beneath the two poles the tape leaned green. Edge-AI compute rose with Ambarella (NVIDIA +2.9% to $200.75), the primes and integrators were firm (CACI +4.3% to $497.75, L3Harris +1.9%, AeroVironment +1.9%, Motorola Solutions +1.1%, Kratos +0.9%), and the domestic parts names held up (Unusual Machines +3.2%, Red Cat +2.0%, USA Rare Earth +2.0%). CACI's move is worth flagging on-chokepoint: it followed a July 30 award of a $500 million counter-UAS IDIQ vehicle — the counter-drone side of the same autonomy race — with SkyValor selected as the first task order under JIATF-401's Domestic Shield effort.
The calendar ahead is dense. Amprius reports Q2 on August 5; MP Materials and Motorola Solutions on August 6; Unusual Machines around August 12; NVIDIA on August 26; and Ambarella on August 27, which will now be read against the NXP overhang. On the program side, the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" drone down-select is set for August 24 and the FAA's Part 108 BVLOS final rule remains expected in the second half of 2026. Two policy clocks bound the materials trade: China's one-year suspension of its October 2025 rare-earth export controls expires November 10, and the NDAA §844/§854 ban on Chinese-melted or -fabricated magnets in DoD systems takes effect January 1, 2027.
