Thursday's risk-on reversal lifted the whole high-beta drone-and-materials basket — Unusual Machines led on momentum while L3Harris fell despite a beat after pushing its missile spinoff into next year.
Unusual Machines topped the basket at +18.8% to $20.51, though the honest read is momentum rather than a single hard catalyst. The FPV drone-component maker is riding a second straight week of gains on an executive-pay reset that ties leadership rewards to the share price, a $150 million raise that lifted cash to roughly $223 million, and 296% year-over-year revenue growth — all of it amplified by a broad reversal that rewarded the highest-beta names in the domestic, NDAA-compliant drone-parts chokepoint (motors, airframes, flight controllers). The move is positioning and balance-sheet strength meeting a risk-on tape, not a fresh contract print; the company's own Q2 numbers are not due until mid-August.
L3Harris was the vertical's clear laggard, down −8.6% to $271.90 despite a genuine beat — Q2 EPS of $3.13 topped the $2.80 consensus and management raised full-year guidance. The market punished two other things: softer revenue detail against pre-print whispers with segment-margin pressure, and, more pointedly, the decision to delay the planned spinoff and IPO of the Aerojet Rocketdyne missile-propulsion business into next year, with the CEO citing unfavorable market conditions. Owning the solid-rocket-motor chokepoint is a structural asset; deferring the event that was supposed to surface its value is what the tape docked.
Beneath the two poles, the basket was overwhelmingly green and the rare-earth chokepoint led it: MP Materials +9.3% to $41.66, USA Rare Earth +12.1%, Energy Fuels +9.0%, and ReElement's parent American Resources +7.0% — the magnet-and-materials supply chain that every domestic airframe depends on. Edge-AI silicon rose with it (Ambarella +7.1%, Lattice +10.2%, NVIDIA +2.6%), as did the energy-density names (Enovix +13.6%, Amprius +12.2%) and the airframe/counter-UAS makers (Ondas +11.5%, Red Cat +9.0%, Draganfly +9.5%, Kratos +5.2%, AeroVironment +3.1%, Iridium +7.4%). The only other red marks were among the primes and merchant silicon — Qualcomm −2.6%, CACI −2.1% — reading as rotation out of lower-beta names into the reversal.
The calendar ahead is dense. Amprius reports Q2 on August 5; MP Materials and Motorola Solutions on August 6; Unusual Machines around August 12; Ambarella on August 27; and NVIDIA on August 26. On the policy and program side, the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" drone down-select is set for August 24, the USAF's CCA Increment 1 competitive production decision is targeted within this fiscal year, and the FAA's Part 108 BVLOS final rule is expected in the second half of 2026 — the regulatory unlock the commercial side of the basket has been waiting on.
