A hawkish 9-3 Fed hold sent high-beta drone names into a broad rout — AeroVironment fell 9% even as it deepened its autonomy stack, and the only green in the basket was a private-fund NAV mark.
There was no real operating-company gainer in the drone basket on Wednesday. The largest green mark, the one that fills the leader slot, was the Fundrise Innovation Fund wrapper (VCX +3.3% to $34.92) — a private-markets NAV that holds SPV sleeves of names like Anduril, not a tradeable read on the session. The only other green was the ARK Venture fund (ARKVX +0.4%) and Ambarella (+0.3% to $69.19), both essentially flat. Everything that actually trades on drone-choke fundamentals fell, because the day's driver was macro, not sector: the Fed held rates in a divided 9-3 vote — three regional presidents wanted an immediate hike — and the 10-year Treasury yield jumped seven basis points past 4.67%. When duration re-prices that fast, unprofitable defense-tech small caps are the first thing sold.
Ondas was the sharpest break, −13.5% to $6.80, with no company-specific catalyst — the purest high-beta expression of a rate-driven risk-off. Ondas maps to the counter-UAS and airspace-security chokepoint, a business the market values almost entirely on out-year growth, and out-year growth is exactly what a jump in the discount rate punishes. The structural read is unforgiving: sub-$10 drone-security names carry no earnings cushion, so on a hawkish-surprise day they trade as pure duration.
The damage ran through the core basket. AeroVironment fell 9.1% to $142.12 even as it announced an AI-autonomy partnership with Applied Intuition to fold self-driving software into its Mayhem launched-effects system — a genuine deepening of its effector stack that the tape simply swamped, with the still-unresolved SCAR satcom-recompete overhang not helping. Other core and speculative names bled with it: Kratos −9.8% to $43.88, Red Cat −9.1% to $6.77, Unusual Machines −13.4% to $17.26, Mercury Systems −9.3% to $90.17, LightPath −9.5% to $9.39. The NDAA-compliant rare-earth supply choke sold too — MP Materials −7.7% to $38.10, USA Rare Earth −7.0% to $13.07 — ahead of MP's own print.
The calendar turns busy fast. Amprius reports Q2 on August 5; MP Materials and Motorola Solutions (for Silvus counter-drone integration color) on August 6. The Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" drone competition and production decision lands August 24, and NVIDIA's Q2 FY2027 print — the read on edge-autonomy silicon — arrives August 26. Then the sector's own stage: Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas September 1-3, the long-overdue FAA Part 108 BVLOS final rule expected in the second half, and AUSA in Washington October 12-14. Until the yield picture settles, though, macro will keep setting this basket's tape.
