A risk-off Friday left the drone stack red from top to bottom — defense primes and germanium optics held while batteries, rare earths and small-drone names sold off, and LightPath cratered on a $50M raise.
The only real green in Friday's basket was Umicore's ADR, up 3.0% to $5.69 — and that is itself the story. Umicore maps to the EO/IR chokepoint as one of the West's few germanium refiners, and germanium is the substrate under cooled thermal-imaging optics. On a session when every other quotable drone name finished lower or barely positive, a thin materials ADR leading by three percent means there was no drone winner Friday, only a defensive bid on the one input the tape wasn't willing to sell.
LightPath was the laggard, down 12.4% to $10.83, on dilution rather than demand. The company — also an EO/IR optics name, in molded infrared lens assemblies — priced a $50M raise, selling 7,142,800 Class A shares at $14.00 in a primary-plus-secondary deal with North Run. The stock, which topped $18 in late May, gapped through $11 as the market discounted the enlarged share count. The chokepoint (IR optics for thermal seekers and gimbals) is intact; the balance-sheet math is what changed — a small-cap funding growth by diluting into a soft tape.
The defense primes were the ballast. Motorola Solutions rose 2.7% to $417.83 on the comms-and-datalinks side, with RTX up 1.7% to $212.79, Elbit up 1.4% to $820.21 and CACI up 1.3%. Everything speculative bled. Batteries led the decline — Enovix off 9.0% to $3.95, Amprius off 6.8% to $9.24 — and the rare-earth-magnet names followed the broad materials sell: MP Materials down 7.5% to $41.30, USA Rare Earth down 6.5% to $14.15, Energy Fuels down 5.9%. Small-drone and FPV names were hit hardest: Unusual Machines fell 10.0% to $19.36, Red Cat 4.9%. Autonomy silicon tracked the semiconductor rout, with Lattice down 7.0% to $128.42 and Ambarella off 3.5%, and even AeroVironment gave back 5.8% to $149.51.
The print calendar opens now: RTX and Iridium report Q2 on July 28, Enovix on July 29, then Amprius, Motorola (with Silvus-integration color) and MP Materials in the first week of August. The harder dated catalyst for the vertical is the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" Drone Dominance final competition and production down-select in late August (around Aug 24), which decides real program dollars — the kind of demand signal that reprices the airframe and NDAA-supply chokepoints regardless of what the tape does in the meantime.
