Daily brief · 2026-07-24
AeroVironment's record quarter and RTX's beat-and-raise lit the whole autonomy-and-munitions complex, and the NDAA-compliant parts layer led the sympathy bid.
Unusual Machines led the quotable basket, up 9.4% to $21.52, riding the same updraft that carried the group after AeroVironment reported a record fiscal Q4 — revenue of $641.6M, more than double a year ago, and adjusted EPS of $1.84 against a ~$1.47 consensus. UMAC is the clean read on the NDAA-compliant supply chokepoint: it stocks the motors, flight controllers, and — via its rare-earth-magnet push — the domestically sourced components that a Blue-list drone build cannot legally substitute from China. When the category's largest listed name prints a blowout, the parts layer that gates every compliant airframe re-rates hardest, and UMAC did.
Enovix was the laggard, down 7.3% to $4.34, sliding to a fresh 52-week low on no company-specific news — its silicon-anode cells sit at the energy-density chokepoint for long-endurance and swarm platforms, but sentiment across the battery names stayed weak into its own Q2 print, due after the close on July 29/30. The move is a positioning drift, not a disclosed catalyst; the read is that the market is discounting the endurance layer until Enovix shows shipping volume, and until then the number is qualitative sentiment, not news.
The session was a broad defense repricing. RTX beat and raised — $1.89 adjusted EPS on $24.71B in revenue, up 14.5%, on a record backlog — and jumped 7.3% to $209.16, and the effectors-and-sensing complex followed: Mercury Systems +7.5% to $106.34, AeroVironment itself +5.6% to $158.73, L3Harris +5.1% to $299.67 ahead of its own July 29 report, Leonardo DRS +4.9% to $48.16, Kratos +3.2% to $49.44, and CACI +2.8% to $480.61. Ambarella, the edge-vision SoC that gives a drone its eyes, added 2.2% to $70.51. The pattern was consistent: the money went to the primes and the compliant-component names that turn budgets into fielded autonomy.
The calendar stays dense. Iridium and RTX's follow-through headline July 28, Enovix's Q2 lands July 29/30, and MP Materials (Aug 6) and Motorola Solutions (Aug 6, with Silvus integration color) test the magnet and mesh-radio chokepoints. The hard event is the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" Drone Dominance final competition and production down-select on Aug 24, which decides which airframes clear volume procurement, before Commercial UAV Expo opens in Las Vegas on Sep 1. Today's tape rewarded the names with earnings in hand; the next month grades the ones still to print.
