Daily brief · 2026-07-22
A counter-UAS supercycle bid ran through drone as Red Cat, Unusual Machines and Ondas jumped double digits on US-Iran tension and the Pentagon's drone build-out — while LightPath's 22% pop was a technical, index-flow recovery rather than fresh news.
LightPath Technologies (LPTH) led the basket, up 22.2% to $12.66, but the move carried the hallmarks of a technical recovery rather than a fresh fundamental catalyst: the stock joined the Russell 2000 and 3000 at the end of June, pulling it in front of index funds, and it was snapping back from a sharp drawdown after a roughly 300% run over the prior year. The fundamental backdrop is real — LightPath sits on the infrared-optics and seeker chokepoint that ISR drones and loitering munitions depend on, is transitioning to its proprietary BlackDiamond material, and recently booked an $11 million infrared-camera contract — but Tuesday's tape was flow, not a headline. Treat the print as a repricing of a thin float, not a new order.
The session's actual story was the counter-drone complex. With US-Iran tensions keeping defense-demand expectations elevated and the Pentagon's Drone Dominance program targeting 300,000 low-cost attack drones by 2027, retail and momentum capital piled back into the hardware names: Red Cat (RCAT) +10.7% to $8.59, Unusual Machines (UMAC) +12.4% to $19.53, and Ondas (ONDS) +11.5% to $7.66. Red Cat's Teal subsidiary has advanced to the "Gauntlet II" round of the Drone Dominance down-select, one of 19 finalists competing at Fort Carson in August; Ondas recently closed its $196.6 million all-stock purchase of defense-software firm Omnisys, pushing beyond airframes into the software layer.
The move was broad across drone's other chokepoints. The autonomy-compute tier ran — Ambarella (AMBA) +8.5% to $71.30 and Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC) +8.2% to $135.83, both riding the day's memory-led semiconductor rally — while the battery link firmed with Amprius (AMPX) +7.3% to $10.88. The airframe and effects primes participated more modestly: AeroVironment (AVAV) +4.4% to $148.84 and Kratos (KTOS) +4.9% to $48.21. The lone notable decliner was CACI International (CACI), off 2.3% to $440.76 with no company-specific news — consistent with capital rotating out of the defense-IT services primes and into the higher-beta counter-UAS hardware.
The calendar turns to prints now. Teledyne (TDY) reports Q2 today, July 22 — its first result since the LASSO award and a read on the FLIR sensor franchise. Iridium (IRDM) and RTX (RTX) follow on July 28, Enovix (ENVX) on July 29, and Amprius (AMPX) on August 5. The hard event, though, is the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" final competition and production down-select in late August (around August 24), which decides which of the counter-UAS finalists — Red Cat among them — converts program momentum into actual production volume.
