The autonomy-compute chokepoint led drone higher as Ambarella rebounded 6.2% and Ondas jumped on an Australian counter-drone order, while the battery and rare-earth supply tier softened in a risk-off tape.
Ambarella (AMBA) rose 6.2% to $65.70, leading the basket, a rebound after a sharp multi-session pullback rather than a fresh company catalyst. It owns a real chokepoint: edge-AI vision SoCs (the CVflow family) that fit perception-class autonomy inside a drone's power budget — the compute-at-the-edge strait that decides whether an airframe can see and decide without a datalink. The standing thesis is unchanged — the late-June Wall Street top-pick calls and the $800M+ ten-year Hanwha edge-AI agreement — and the stock simply recovered with the broader edge-AI and robotics complex. Ambarella reports Q2 FY2027 on August 27.
The laggard was the drone-power link. Ultralife (ULBI) fell 4.4% to $5.27, the basket's biggest decliner, a small-cap with no company headline that trades as the highest-beta expression of the energy-storage chokepoint; Enovix (ENVX), the silicon-anode name, fell 3.2% to $4.57 alongside it. The structural read is unchanged: power density is the binding constraint on endurance and payload, and these micro-caps are where that constraint is priced most violently — so they sold first when the tape turned defensive.
Counter-UAS was the session's bright spot. Ondas (ONDS) rose 5.3% to $6.87 after announcing a $6.9M order from Australia's Department of Defence for DTIM single-operator counter-sUAS kits — the detect, track, identify and mitigate layer of the airspace-denial chokepoint — supplied through the Dzyne/HIFraser channel it acquired earlier this month. DroneShield's ADR (DRSHF) firmed 1.8%. Defense-electronics names were mixed to soft: CACI -2.2% to $451.33, Teledyne -1.4%. The rare-earth and magnet link — the physical chokepoint under every motor and airframe — was mixed: USA Rare Earth -2.7% to $15.23, against MP Materials +1.0% and Energy Fuels +2.2%. The macro backdrop was risk-off: the Dow fell 0.6% and the S&P 500 0.2% while the Nasdaq held near flat, chips trimmed gains ahead of Big Tech earnings, and oil hovered near $90 on US–Iran weekend tension.
The catalysts now come print by print. Teledyne reports Q2 on July 22, its first read since the LASSO loitering-munition award; RTX and Iridium on July 28; Enovix on July 29, a direct test of the silicon-anode battery thesis; Amprius on August 5; MP Materials and Motorola Solutions on August 6. The hard drone-specific event is the Pentagon's 'Gauntlet II' final competition and production down-select in late August, with Ambarella's Q2 FY2027 on August 27 the read on whether edge-AI design wins are converting to revenue.
