Defense-electronics primes held while the speculative PNT and airframe tier gave back ground — DRS bid on counter-drone budget, NextNav led the small-caps down.
Leadership sat with the sensing-and-force-protection chokepoint. Leonardo DRS (DRS) rose 2.4% to $44.14 — the EO/IR-sensor and counter-UAS electronics prime — as the demand signal behind the tape stayed loud: the FY2027 Department of War budget request earmarks $53.6B for drone dominance and counter-drone technologies, plus $20.6B for counter-unmanned systems, a 424% jump over the FY2026 enacted level. In a session where the broad tape was risk-off, the money that moved in this vertical went to the layer that owns the sensing and counter-UAS bottleneck rather than the airframe.
The laggard was the speculative alternative-PNT link. NextNav (NN) fell 5.6% to $13.06 — the terrestrial GPS-backup and positioning name mapped to the comms-datalinks-PNT chokepoint — with no company-specific news, just the risk-off tape washing out the small-cap, pre-revenue tier while it still waits on FCC approvals for its PNT and drone-sensing spectrum. This was a repricing of duration, not of the thesis: the PNT chokepoint is real, but the market paid for cash flow, not optionality, on Friday.
The split ran through the whole basket. AeroVironment (AVAV), the loitering-munitions pure-play, fell 4.7% to $142.20, extending a July give-back of more than 12% off its late-June earnings pop; NVIDIA (NVDA), the autonomy-compute link, dropped 2.2% to $202.81 inside the broader semiconductor rout. Against that, the electronics-and-supply tier held — BAE Systems' ADR (BAESY) rose 1.9% to $100.99 and Unusual Machines (UMAC), the NDAA-compliant/rare-earth-magnet name, added 1.7% to $16.93. The read: the entrenched primes and compliant-supply names absorbed the risk-off session, while the speculative airframe and PNT tier led down.
The catalysts now come as prints. Teledyne reports Q2 on July 22 — its first read after the LASSO award — with Iridium and RTX on July 28 and Enovix on July 29. The event to mark is the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" drone-dominance final competition and production down-select on August 24, the clearest near-term signal on which airframes convert the budget line into orders; NVIDIA's Q2 lands August 26, and the Commercial UAV Expo runs September 1–3 in Las Vegas.
