The private-defense-tech wrapper VCX reversed +12.4% to lead the drone basket on July 9, while AeroVironment fell 5.9% on a fresh RBC downgrade.

The Fundrise Innovation Fund (VCX) rose 12.4% to $69.75, the biggest gainer in the drone basket and a near-total reversal of the two sessions that had made it the prior brief's laggard — it bled to $62.05 on July 8. VCX is the only listed line onto Anduril (roughly 6.9% of NAV), the autonomous-systems prime this vertical maps as the private counter-UAS and loitering-munition chokepoint; it also carries OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks and SpaceX. Its premium to a heavily marked NAV re-expanded as the public AI complex ripped — a sentiment swing, not a fresh mark. The companion wrapper Destiny Tech100 (DXYZ) moved in lockstep, +11.2% to $27.65.

AeroVironment (AVAV) fell 5.9% to $148.40, extending a slide of more than 20% on the week. RBC Capital cut it to Sector Perform from Outperform and trimmed its target to $180 from $210; Piper Sandler stayed Overweight but took its target to $235 from $248. The overhang is company-specific and structural — a June restatement that understated operating losses by roughly $89.4 million, plus securities suits tied to the cancelled SCAR Space Force award. AVAV owns the tactical-UAS and loitering-munition node (Switchblade) this vertical treats as a hard chokepoint, so its de-rating is a real check on the pure-play end of the map even as the wrapper names bid.

The operating basket was mixed. Edge-connectivity and components rose — Lantronix (LTRX) +7.1% to $5.70, EnerSys (ENS) +3.3% — while the rare-earth and magnet supply line diverged: USA Rare Earth (USAR) +2.3% and Energy Fuels (UUUU) +2.7%, but MP Materials (MP) −2.4% to $51.71. The prime contractors leaned red into the tech rally — Kratos (KTOS) −3.0% to $48.85, Elbit (ESLT) −2.5%, BAE Systems (BAESY) −3.7%, L3Harris (LHX) −1.2% — with RTX (RTX) roughly flat. The tape rewarded the AI-adjacent wrappers and the component layer, not the defense primes.

The calendar turns dense next week. The House is set to take up the FY27 NDAA (H.R. 8800) on the floor July 15, the same day Army–RTX Coyote multi-year framework details are expected. Earnings then arrive: Teledyne on July 22 (its first print since the LASSO award), Iridium and RTX on July 28, and Enovix on July 29. Each tests whether program dollars and battery-and-comms demand are showing up in numbers — against a basket the market is currently pricing on sentiment.
