Autonomy compute led the drone basket as Qualcomm rose 5.8% on a data-center reaffirmation, while the airframes-and-primes complex gave back post-earnings gains — AeroVironment −7.4%.
Qualcomm (QCOM) rose 5.8% to $186.48, the drone basket's biggest gainer, after Benchmark reaffirmed its Buy rating and $300 price target and pointed to the company's data-center push — custom silicon already in production and talks with two potential hyperscale customers underwriting fiscal 2027. On this map Qualcomm sits on the autonomy-compute chokepoint: the Snapdragon-class edge silicon that turns an airframe into an autonomous system. The catalyst here is a data-center story, not a drone-demand one — QCOM is a watch-tier name whose relevance is the compute node, not the platform — but it anchored the one green corner of an otherwise heavy defense tape.
The heaviest name was AeroVironment (AVAV), down 7.4% to $176.84, unwinding part of a roughly 35% run that had carried it to $190.89 just one session earlier. That run was earnings-driven — fiscal Q4 revenue of $641.6M (up 133% year over year) and a $500M Army award for Titan RF anti-UAS effectors — and Monday was profit-taking on a stretched move, not fresh bad news. AVAV is the widest-footprint name on the map, spanning airframes-and-primes, RF/EW and detection, interceptors-and-effectors, and NDAA-compliant supply — so when it exhales, the core of the chokepoint model exhales with it.
The pullback clustered in the primes. Kratos (KTOS) fell 3.3% and Red Cat (RCAT) 3.2% on the airframes node, Mercury Systems (MRCY) 2.5% on EO/IR, and LightPath (LPTH) 3.2% on the same sensor chokepoint. The batteries chokepoint went the other way — Amprius (AMPX) +5.7% and Enovix (ENVX) +4.9% on energy density — with Ondas (ONDS) +5.5% and NextNav (NN) +5.7% on the comms/PNT node. The read is rotation inside the basket: edge compute and energy density bid, the platform primes sold after AVAV's spike.
The calendar turns political and then to prints. The Senate Armed Services Committee marks up the FY27 NDAA on July 8, with a House floor vote on H.R. 8800 slated for July 15 — the same day RTX is expected to detail its Army Coyote multi-year framework. Earnings then land: Teledyne (July 22), RTX (July 28), and Enovix (July 29) on the batteries node, before the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" Drone Dominance production down-select in late August — the hard catalyst for the airframes-and-primes chokepoint AVAV just led lower.
