Rocket Lab's ~$54-a-share cash-and-stock takeover of Iridium sent IRDM up 25.4% and put the drone fleet's resilient-PNT backbone in play, while the broad risk-on tape lifted small-cap airframe and counter-UAS names.

Iridium (IRDM) was the basket's runaway leader, up 25.4% to $54.59, after Rocket Lab announced a definitive agreement to acquire the company in a cash-and-stock deal worth roughly $54 a share — $27 in cash plus Rocket Lab equity. Oppenheimer separately lifted its price target to $60. For this vertical the deal matters less as an M&A headline than as a consolidation of the comms-datalinks-PNT chokepoint: Iridium's 66-satellite L-band mesh is the alternative position-navigation-timing and beyond-line-of-sight datalink layer that drones fall back on when GPS is jammed and terrestrial networks are denied. Folding that constellation — and its L-band spectrum — into a launch-and-spacecraft owner concentrates a scarce piece of the contested-electromagnetic-spectrum stack under one roof.

Leonardo DRS (DRS) was the laggard, down 3.6% to $40.95, with no company-specific news — a rotation casualty. On a session where capital chased high-beta tech and space, the steadier defense electro-optics primes were used as a funding source; DRS, an electro-optical/infrared sensor supplier, slipped alongside a generally soft prime complex (RTX −0.4%, L3Harris −0.6%, Kratos −0.6%) even as the rest of the drone basket rallied. The move reads as positioning, not a change in the EO/IR sensing thesis.

The broader tape was strongly green and concentrated in the smaller, higher-beta corners of the supply chain. On the airframes-and-NDAA-compliant-supply chokepoint, Red Cat (RCAT) jumped 11.2% and DroneShield's US line (DRSHF) rose 10.9%, the latter also keyed to RF/EW counter-UAS detection. LightPath (LPTH) gained 11.0% on the EO/IR-optics node, Ambarella (AMBA) added 7.9% on autonomy-compute, and American Resources (AREC) climbed 6.7% on the rare-earth-magnet input chokepoint. AeroVironment (AVAV) was a notable underperformer at +0.8%, flat into its own print.

The calendar is immediate. AeroVironment reports Q4 and full-year FY2026 results on June 30 — its first complete fiscal year folding in BlueHalo — the cleanest near-term read on whether loitering-munition and counter-UAS demand is converting to revenue. Policy is the next leg: the Senate Armed Services Committee is expected to mark up the FY27 NDAA around July 8, with a House floor vote on H.R. 8800 targeted for July 15 — the authorization that sets drone procurement and NDAA-compliant-supply rules. Teledyne reports Q2 on July 22 (its first print since the LASSO award), and RTX and Iridium both report July 28, the latter now shadowed by the Rocket Lab deal timeline.
