A risk-off Thursday hit the small-cap drone complex; infrared-optics maker LightPath was the lone meaningful gainer while Qualcomm's edge-AI guidance bucked the tape.

LightPath Technologies (LPTH) led the drone basket, up 4.8% to $13.63, with no discrete same-day catalyst — a recovery bounce in a small-cap after its early-June $50M registered direct raise, against a backdrop of a record ~$110.6M order backlog (up 196% year-on-year) for infrared cameras and BlackDiamond chalcogenide optics. LightPath sits on the EO/IR-sensors chokepoint: the seeker-grade thermal imaging that lets uncrewed systems see at night and through obscurants, and one of the few links in the map where a US name controls a proprietary materials franchise (its BlackDiamond glass is licensed from the Naval Research Laboratory). It was the standout green in an otherwise red tape.

Lantronix (LTRX) was the worst, down 6.2% to $5.32, extending a multi-day slide with no fresh company news — recent items (its SLC 9000 out-of-band console launch for AI data centers, Needham's price-target raise to $11, preliminary Russell 3000 inclusion) were all positive. Lantronix maps to the autonomy-compute chokepoint, the edge-networking and out-of-band control that ground stations and uncrewed fleets ride; the move was high-beta small-cap risk-off, not a thesis break. The broader complex followed it lower: Red Cat (RCAT −4.6%), DroneShield (DRSHF −4.6%) and the rare-earth-magnet names — American Resources (AREC −5.6%), USA Rare Earth (USAR −3.5%), MP Materials (MP −1.6%) — all sold off, with even the primes softening (AeroVironment −3.9%, Kratos −3.4%).

The exception that proves the rotation was Qualcomm (QCOM +3.8%, $204.90), which mapped here to the autonomy-compute chokepoint — the edge-AI silicon that runs onboard perception and flight autonomy — rose after raising its fiscal-2029 non-handset (auto and IoT) revenue guidance, the rare cash-generative incumbent rewarded on a day that punished the pre-profit hardware names. Teledyne (TDY +2.5%) and EnerSys (ENS +3.4%, batteries) were the other green spots. The session itself was breadth-down: the Nasdaq fell 0.46% for a fourth straight day, dragged by a 6% Apple drop, while the Dow set a record — money rotating out of high-beta speculation, exactly the cohort the listed drone names occupy.

The calendar turns concrete fast. AeroVironment's Q4/FY2026 — its first full fiscal year including BlueHalo — lands after the close Monday, June 29, the cleanest read yet on whether the loitering-munition order book is converting. The FY27 NDAA then moves through Congress, with Senate Armed Services markup expected around July 8 and a House floor vote on H.R. 8800 targeted for July 15 — the policy spine of the NDAA-compliant-supply chokepoint. Teledyne's Q2 (July 22, its first print after the LASSO award), then Iridium and RTX (July 28), follow; further out, China's rare-earth export-control suspension expires November 10, the hard deadline hanging over the magnet chokepoint.
