Rare-earth magnet names lead the drone basket as China's export squeeze offsets a rate-driven risk-off across the rest of the complex.

USA Rare Earth (USAR) climbed 8.3% to $23.55, and MP Materials (MP +6.6%, $60.84) tracked it higher, as the permanent-magnet chokepoint drew a sector bid on a session when most risk assets fell. There was no single dated USAR catalyst on June 17; the move extends a multi-week re-rating tied to China's tightening export controls on rare-earth compounds and the Western onshoring push. USA Rare Earth has commissioned Phase 1a of its Stillwater, Oklahoma sintered-NdFeB magnet plant and was selected for up to $19.3M in Department of Energy critical-materials funding, while MP guides to first magnet sales from its Independence facility in the second half of 2026. For drones the read is structural: every brushless motor in a quadcopter or loitering munition runs on neodymium-iron-boron magnets, and a domestic magnet line is the chokepoint this basket prices.

Amprius (AMPX) was the steepest decliner, down 3.2% to $15.00, with no company-specific news behind it. The Federal Reserve held its policy rate at 3.50%–3.75% but raised its dot-plot path — several officials now pencil in a 2026 hike — sending Treasury yields up and hitting pre-profit hardware hardest. Amprius's silicon-anode cells are the energy-density chokepoint for long-endurance UAS; the thesis is intact, the multiple is rate-sensitive. Unusual Machines (UMAC −3.0%, $24.45) fell alongside it.

Across the rest of the tape, Iridium (IRDM +3.7%, $45.05) firmed on its role in resilient PNT and satellite communications — a counterweight to the GPS-jamming problem that defines contested-airspace drone operations. The defense-electronics and autonomy names were mixed-to-lower in sympathy with the broad risk-off rather than on company news; this was a macro session, not a fundamental one, for most of the basket.

The next hard catalyst is AeroVironment (AVAV), which reports fiscal Q4/FY2026 — its first full year after the BlueHalo combination — in the June 23–30 window. Beyond that: the Army–RTX Coyote multi-year framework details are guided to land around mid-July, Teledyne (TDY) reports Q2 on July 22 in its first print after the LASSO award, and the Pentagon's "Gauntlet II" drone-dominance final competition and production down-select arrives in late August, setting the pecking order for the domestic small-UAS chokepoint.
